Video doorbells are convenient, but are they enough? An Ottawa installer compares doorbell cameras with wired security cameras on image quality, reliability, storage and winter performance.
Video doorbells are everywhere now, and for good reason: they’re cheap, they’re easy, and they let you talk to the courier from your phone. The question we hear is whether a doorbell camera replaces a proper security camera at the front of the house. Usually it doesn’t, and here’s why, along with when it genuinely is enough.
It sees who’s at the door, at face height, and lets you answer. For package theft, unwanted visitors and knowing when the kids got home, that’s exactly the right tool. Setup takes an afternoon and it uses your existing doorbell wiring or a battery.
The lens is very wide so it can show the whole porch, which means anyone past the bottom step is small in the frame. It records clips on motion, not continuously, so events that start outside its detection zone are missed. It runs over Wi-Fi from the worst possible spot, the outside of an exterior wall, so it drops connection more than anything else in the house. Storage is almost always a cloud subscription. And in an Ottawa January, battery models can lose most of their runtime and their motion detection gets sluggish in the cold.
A PoE camera at the front of the house is powered and connected by one cable, so it doesn’t care about Wi-Fi or batteries. It records continuously to a local recorder, so nothing is missed and there’s no monthly fee. Cameras with a proper lens and true night vision give you a usable face or licence plate from the driveway, not just the porch. And it’s mounted where you choose, typically high enough to be out of reach, angled to cover the driveway and walkway as well as the door. Our guide to camera placement covers the front-of-house layout.
Often, yes, and they complement each other. The doorbell handles two-way talk and package notifications. The security camera handles evidence: continuous recording, the driveway, the car, the side of the house, and the ability to actually identify someone. Many of our residential installs keep the client’s existing doorbell and add two to four wired cameras around it. For the deterrence side, see do security cameras deter break-ins.
A condo or apartment with one entry door and no driveway. A rental where you can’t run cable. A tight budget where the main concern is packages. In those cases a good doorbell camera is a sensible stopping point, and we’ll say so.
